Rev. Charles Preston Ostrom

Rev. Charles Preston Ostrom of Shepherd, retired member of the Michigan Conference, died August 10 at the Carson City Hospital. Mr. Ostrom was born February 2, 1871, at Okemos. He spent 12 years in Christian evangelistic work before joining the Michigan Conference in 1904. Through the years he served the following charges: Cooper and Alamo, Kendall, Delton and Cressy, Delton and Milo, Irving, McBain, Weidman, Coral, Sand Lake and Pierson, Sanford and Hope, Morley and Stanwood, Coral and Morley, Marion, Marion and Evart Circuit, and Newaygo. He retired in 1932 but later served two years at Maple Rapids, retiring again in 1936. Mr. Ostrom, who observed his 93rd birthday last February, was presented with the Conference Cane, by Bishop Marshall R. Reed, on June 11 at the Michigan Annual Conference for being the oldest member of the conference.

On June 28, 1916, he married Effie R. Bozer who died in 1957. In January of 1959 he married a childhood friend, Mrs. Pearl Wiersma, the widow of David Wiersma. She died in May 1959.

Mr. Ostrom is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Betty Pregal of Orlando, Florida, Mrs. Ruth McArthur of Shepherd, Mrs. Dee Allen of Maple Rapids, Mrs. Russell Allswede of Mt. Pleasant and Mrs. Max Elliott of St. Johns; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Olan Gorby of Sand Lake; 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Shepherd Methodist Church August 13 with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
